As everyone knows (or should), proper grooming is necessary for a hot spot, well, as hot as South Beach.

With that thought in mind, I knew today would be the perfect day to pay a visit to Slope Suds, a (this is unavoidable) hot spot in the south part of Park Slope.

Located just blocks away from my new place, I passed by it when I first moved into the neighborhood, and based on name alone, assumed it was a laundromat. (But who knows? My buds just played a gig at a place called The Soap Box Laundro Lounge in North Carolina…apparently there’s a trend in clean-naming!)

Slope Suds is not a laundromat, or a music venue, or anything related to the two - what they are is a cute, friendly, and unpretentious hair and beauty salon that is creating ever-increasing cyber-buzz about the excellent brow-shaping skills found within.

Since I have a brow fetish, this, above them being within walking distance of my place, was added enticement!

I must now say that any before-heard accolades were a gross understatement and Elke, the makeup and brow artist at Slope Suds, is so so so much more.

Elke Von Freudenberg is a celebrity makeup artist and brow specialist who is so popular that she travels back and forth between clients in LA and NY — and makes house calls! Her set up is a little something like that of a surgeon - instruments, wax, tweezers, trimmers, and a variety of pencils, powders, and tints - and, much like a serious diagnostician, she will intricately study your every facial feature before so much as lifting her tweezers.

Elke studied me, and agreed with my own diagnosis - I had nice brows (they were afterall, worked on by some pretty notable names of late!), but I suffered the ailment of having a “good” brow and a “bad” brow, and this problem was making my face entirely uneven! Couple that with hairs not growing back at the same rate, and a badly-needed tinting, and …oh my… I was certainly in no shape to be hopping on a plane to South Beach. (Alas.)

Help was, thank god, before me.

In the space of a half hour, Elke trimmed, tweezed, and neated. (Next time, we’ll do a bit of sugaring as well!). She even did a little exfoliation - turns out that the best way to prime the brows for tweezing (and the patient not to get red bumps) is to ready the skin in the same way you would for a good tan!

Makes sense to me, but I never thought of it before. Elke has lots of great visions when it comes to brows - in fact, she coined The Model Eyebrow, which encompasses tons of great theory and concepts she uses on her clients, including: The secret to model eyebrows, is to never completely wax your eyebrow. Models know that eyebrow looks come and go, and if you wax only, you lose the ability to grow in your eyebrows at a later date should you want to change your look. The best technique is to just wax the hairs that are not needed and tweeze to define the shape of the eyebrow.

So, we shaped, we created …we evened out my uneven arch…and then Elke completed the look by applying the perfect level of tint. She has a unique approach where she applies the tint for five seconds, removes it, and reapplies, until you reach your perfect shade…too something I should have looked into prior to previous disasters.

The results…South Beach perfection. And then I got my hair done as well! Shall share more on that tomorrow…I have a suitcase to pack!

I hearby declare Slope Suds my new favorite salon, ever, and see even less reason to venture into “the city” for, well, anything. (I mean it this time.)

Brows by Elke Von Freudenberg

One of the things I def wanted to do in NYC was to go see the fab “Eyebrow Specialist” Elke Von Fruedenberg. I had been trying to coordinate my trips with her bi-coastal schedule and was lucky enough to get an appointment for this trip on Saturday morning. So, before I went, I took a “before” pic of my brows:

Little messy, but I like a fuller brow, so, that’s what she got to work with.

And this is how great they looked afterwards: She told me that I had great shape, that my arch was in the right place, but that she wanted to just “sharpen them up a bit”. I was all for it and I think the results are great. (*the makeup is after my appt at Saks for the D&G Makeup launch - def more about that later.)

And here I am with the lovely lady herself: She was super generous with her time - even after my epic address FAIL! She does brows a neat way - she put on her super magnifying reader glasses and has you *sit up* in front of her, not laying down. She says this way she sees how your face falls naturally and can better shape your brows to fit your face this way. The didn’t use any wax or threading on me. Just pluck plucked me neat with her tweezers. (*Neat tidbit - when I asked her who her most famous person she had met - get this - Oprah! Yep. She was doing the makeup for one of O’s friends, and next thing you know O walks in. Crazy world, eh?). I didn’t have any leftover redness, like after waxing, so I was able to keep on trucking on with my day.

Oh, in addition to doing brows all over the place, Elke also has a brow product line called Elke: The Brow Collection that has all kinds of brow shadows, brow pencils, and her “Clear Eyebrow Ware”, which acts like a brow gel, but without the crunchy/flaking. She also let me in on what she has upcoming - which will be amazing for lovelies trying to grow their brows out - but I won’t spill any more than that - I’ll let her share when she is ready.

Like I said, she is bi-coastal, but take a look at her calendar and schedule an appointment when she is on your coast. You won’t be sorry.

Kristen, a new Park Slope mom, volunteered for the make-over.
Here is what Milla describes doing to Kristin’s hair:

“Kristen is a new mom wanting a low maintenance, easy to style hair cut, also a color that would be a little richer. She had previous color, eventually wanting to grow it out, so in order to make that transitional phase to her natural color more smooth I used a dark chocolate demi-permanent color that made her natural color have more depth, shine and no line of demarcation as she worked her way out of the old color”.

After

Demi-Permanent Hair Color is hair color that can only deposit tone (color). Demi-permanent color is like applying stain over wood. When the color is finished you can still see the variation in tones and levels of the natural hair coming through, just like the grain in wood. Usually lasts 2-4 months and gradually fades”.

For the hair cut: she was interested in keeping her length but it felt too thick, bulky and uncomfortable especially since this would be a difficult style to have when the weather starts to get warmer in the spring/summer. Also the style was lacking movement and volume. I added some diagonal layers from the top going down, that way her ends would not be too stringy. I tapered and texturized her midsection in the back for more movement. After I finished the cut she and I were able to see some of her natural wave appear which she didn’t even know existed before. It was humid and rainy out, so I decided to work with the weather and diffuse her hair bringing the curl and wave out.

Make-up colors and techniques:

All the products that were used are made by Youngblood cosmetics (which are sold in the salon). They are a mineral based makeup line and have very few synthetic ingredients in their products. The line is great for anyone with sensitive or problematic skin.

We started with the Neutral loose foundation and buffed it in with the Super Powder brush. The brush is great for distributing the color evenly and smoothly. I then applied the Medium concealer with my finger underneith the eye and on the lid as well.

Using the finger warms the concealer so the coverage is better. The concealer is also good to use as an eyeshadow base, which keeps eye color from moving or creasing.

I used the Moonstone loose shadow all over the eye. It’s the perfect color to use as a highlighter to give the eye a real pop. For day time, I added the black liner right into the lashline and black mascara to give the eyes definition. To bring the eye look into night, I used Irish Moss loose shadow in the crease. Irish Moss is a pretty shade of forest green and it’s a great alternative to black or brown.

Nectar pressed blush is a great shade for the cheeks. It’s peach and very fresh. I used the contour brush to define the cheekbone and on the apple of the cheek as well.

For lips, we used Cedar lipstick and Rose liner. The combination of those colors is a great neutral pink and can be worn both in the day and evening. Deja vu lip gloss looks great over the lipstick in the evening. After being in the salon industry for nearly a decade, Karla founded Slope Suds to bring high-end salon services to her Park Slope community.Karla studied the dry cutting technique with the late John Sahag and his creative styling team at his workshop on Madison Avenue.
5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended

I’ve been to Eliza and Robin Evans. Both are very good, but I find that Elke’s “eye” is more suitable to my own as far as shape and expression. I like a more natural brow with a pleasant expression. I can’t stand the harsh overly extended or arched brows that seem to be out there a lot. I just want to look like me - only better. Elke spent about an hour with me - listening, talking and getting to know my likes and dislikes. She totally understood!! She looked me face-on to see my bone structure and how my brows naturally grew. She explained every part to me and let me even watch while she was doing them so that I could say, “NOOOOOO!!” if I needed to. I didn’t need to. She shaped them and they look beautiful. They are the best I’ve ever had! I still need to grow one in more due to previous overwaxing. But Elke gave me tips on how to get them to grow faster and fuller. I’m SO glad I’ve found her. She is wonderful and I feel really lucky to have her in my neighborhood. WONDERFUL!!!

When In Brooklyn…
Well here they are….my beautiful new eyebrows. Elke is a genius…she was so sweet and welcoming! I was staying on the upper east side and I made my way downtown and eventually to Brooklyn where Ms. Elke works in a salon. Her eyebrow bar is very much sought after and I am sure you can see why.

I don’t have a lot of eyebrows to begin with (super thin Dietrich style over tweezed brows back in the 90’s…don’t ask!) they are fairly sparse as well. Elke managed to clean them up and fill them in just enough so that they were perfect! In addition to my great brows, I got some fantastic bath goodies.

Elke always makes me look my best. She has huge talent: she can do beautiful fresh, clean makeup or wild, way-out looks and everything in between. Elke is always professional and easy to work with, and I call her whenever I need a makeup artist.
